Honolulu’s coffee scene just got another national receipt. When USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards posted the 2026 Best Independent Coffee Shops list on Oct. 28, Drip Studio HNL sat at No. 2 — behind only Tapestry Coffee in Lakeville, Minnesota.
Aloha State Daily flagged the finish on Oct. 29, noting that Honolulu Coffee separately took No. 1 on the Best Coffee Subscriptions list the same cycle. For a shop that opened without cafe experience and built its reputation on five-minute pour-overs, the ranking is a big local win.

What USA Today highlighted
The 10Best write-up calls Drip Studio “Honolulu’s most sophisticated café” and points readers to the bar seats where you can watch pour-overs take shape. Signature drinks called out on the list include:
- An Espresso Mule — a double shot poured over ginger beer
- A Cold Fashioned — cold brew with orange bitters and organic maple syrup
- A broader lineup of matcha, chai and hojicha, plus sandwiches and all-day breakfast
That framing matches what locals already know: this is a specialty shop first, not a grab-and-go chain counter.
How it started
Owner-operators Vince Pōhaku (also written Vincent Pōhaku in earlier coverage) and Kelsie Mercado-Uehara founded the shop in 2023, Aloha State Daily reported when the nomination landed in September. A shop announcement quoted in that story framed the idea simply: Hawaiʻi grows world-class coffee, so people here should drink like it. The founders say they work directly with farms and roasters to put that on the bar.
Honolulu Magazine’s May 2023 profile (updated for the October 2023 print issue) filled in the early picture. Pōhaku, a carpenter by trade who had loved coffee for most of his life, built a space that sits somewhere between a normal cafe and a tasting room. Writer Thomas Obungen described a “coffee bible” listing dozens of roasters Pōhaku was in contact with worldwide — including Rose Coffee Roasters (Switzerland), Portland Ca Phe (Oregon) and White Nēnē Coffee Roasters (Hawaiʻi Island) on one visit — and brewing methods dialed to the beans, from standard pour-overs to Japanese-style iced coffee, Vietnamese pour-over with condensed milk, nitrogen cold brew and Tetsu Kasuya’s Devil’s Brew method.
Mercado-Uehara’s side of the house showed up in the baked goods and plated food: ricotta toast finished with berries and edible flowers, browned-butter miso chocolate chip cookies, citrus olive oil cake, guava jelly bars, open-face sandwiches and salads. Prices quoted in that 2023 story (pour-overs around $6.50, Cold Fashioned with foam $8.50, ricotta toast $12) are historical snapshots — check the board or order-ahead site for what’s current.
The Star-Advertiser’s Sept. 30, 2026 food roundup described the shop as a multi-roaster coffee hub on Fort Street Mall focused on single-origin manual pour-overs and an “omakase-like” bar experience: tell the barista what you like, and they curate from what’s on hand.
What to order on your first visit
If you’re new to the shop, the USA Today shortlist is a fair starter: a single-origin pour-over if you have five minutes, the Espresso Mule if you want something playful, or the Cold Fashioned if you like cocktail-adjacent cold brew. The current site also flags ceremonial-grade matcha and hojicha whisked to order, plus sandwiches, fruit and baked goods made to go. You can order ahead online; the shop says tickets go straight to the bar and are typically ready in about 15–20 minutes.
A bigger Honolulu coffee moment
Drip Studio’s No. 2 finish lands in a year when Honolulu also ranked No. 7 among Food & Wine’s 2026 Global Tastemakers Top 10 U.S. Cities for Coffee, Aloha State Daily noted. Separately, Honolulu Coffee’s subscription program took the national No. 1 subscription slot — a different category, but more proof that island coffee keeps showing up on mainland lists.
For Oʻahu readers, the practical takeaway is simpler: a Fort Street Mall shop that opened in 2023 is now one of the most voted-on independent cafes in the country. Grab a bar seat, give the pour-over its five minutes, and taste why.
