Restaurant weeks are a great excuse to try a place you’ve been meaning to visit, or to go back to an old favorite for less. HONOLULU Magazine’s Restaurant Week, presented by First Hawaiian Bank and Mastercard, gives you nine days of special prix fixe menus at participating restaurants, Nov. 7 through 15. The magazine says you don’t need tickets or passes. Just reserve with the restaurant (or walk in) and order the Restaurant Week menu. It’s dine-in only, and a portion of proceeds goes to the Hawaiʻi Restaurant Association Education Foundation.
As of Monday morning, the official site listed 32 restaurant listings. Most are in Waikīkī, with others in Kakaʻako, downtown, Kaimukī, Kāhala and Hawaiʻi Kai. We read every posted menu and sorted them by price. Unless noted, prices are per person and don’t include tax and tip. Menus can change, so check the restaurant’s listing before you go.
Lunch steals under $40
Kaimuki Shokudo, $22 (lunch, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.). This is the best deal on the list. The 11th Avenue spinoff of the longtime Shokudo on Kapiʻolani Boulevard offers a teishoku set with miso soup, fresh tofu salad, a mini kakuni fried rice or mini chirashi don, misoyaki salmon or teriyaki kanpachi, and your choice of hamachi, salmon or ahi sashimi.
Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman Waikīkī, $25. The listing features a Maui venison loco moco with a house-made patty, from-scratch gravy, a Shaka Mao fried egg, local mushrooms, crispy onions and house-made kimchee over garlic scallion rice.
Istanbul Hawaiʻi, $32 (lunch). Chefs Nili and Ahu, a mother and daughter, are serving Mersin tantuni. It’s wagyu with tomato, onion, sumac, Kahuku parsley and Maui lemon, wrapped in warm lavaş, and the listing says it’s served as two wraps. The dish comes from Chef Ahu’s childhood in Mersin, Türkiye.
Kapa Hale, $36 lunch (Wednesday to Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.) or $40 brunch (Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.). Chef Keaka Lee’s Kāhala restaurant offers choices like oxtail pho (+$5) or pork belly Korean spicy miso ramen at lunch. Weekend brunch starts with a pastry spread and includes mains like the “KFC & Waffle,” Keaka’s fried chicken with a Belgian-style waffle and country gravy.
Three courses for $50 or less
Heavenly Island Lifestyle Waikīkī, $40. You get three courses, with second-course choices from surf and turf to a yuzu miso ahi poke bowl, and desserts like Kona coffee tiramisu.
Earls Kitchen + Bar Waikīkī, $45. Starters include crispy rice sushi and spicy California roll, and the mains include a Nashville crispy chicken sandwich.
Taormina Sicilian Cuisine, $48 lunch or $68 dinner. The Waikīkī Beach Walk restaurant says its menus feature longtime favorites like its beef carpaccio, Roman-style carbonara and house-made tiramisu. Lunch also includes its mentaiko pasta.
Thirty-Eight Restaurant, $49. This Pier 38 seafood spot has three courses. Start with hamachi crudo, an ahi and bluefin toro tostada or shrimp toast. Then choose miso butterfish with squid ink risotto or short rib with bo kho demi-glace, and finish with banana bread and roasted banana ice cream. Wine pairings are $10 more per course.
Zigu, $99 for two. It works out to about $49.50 each for a share-style Japanese meal: Sumida Farm watercress salad, mochiko chicken, a local trio of nigiri, washugyu steak and chilled kale noodles. A sake pairing is $36 more.
Plumeria Beach House, $50. The Kahala Hotel & Resort’s open-air restaurant is serving a “Kahala Business Bento.” It includes ahi poke musubi, sashimi, misoyaki butterfish, ribeye steak, ginger scallion jasmine rice, a chocolate macadamia nut tart and a non-alcoholic drink.
Worth the splurge
- Hau Tree, $55: your pick of an eggs Benedict, avocado toast, the Kaimana Beach Burger or a sandwich with a specialty cocktail or zero-proof drink, plus banana bread “for tomorrow.”
- Westman Cafe, $58 (dinner, 5 to 9 p.m.): a Kakaʻako café menu with a drink, an appetizer, a pasta or Kurobuta pork cotoletta, and passion lemon tart.
- Favorite Son, $59: a three-course dinner centered on a 10-ounce prime rib, at The Ambassador Hotel Waikiki.
- Heavenly Island Lifestyle Hawaiʻi Kai, $60: smoked ahi dip, roast pork with garlic shoyu gravy and pumpkin Basque cheesecake, at the marina.
- ʻOlili Waikīkī, $65 food only or $95 with drinks: dishes include bluefin “sashimi and rice” and kalbi short rib with Kauaʻi shrimp, finished with a petite halo-halo.
- Bigger-ticket menus: The Butcher Bar ($70), MW Restaurant ($75), Arden Waikiki ($75, shared plates), Ruth’s Chris Steak House ($75 to $85), Nori Bar Waikīkī and Ward ($85 platter), Khan Skewer ($88.99, which serves two to three), Azure ($100), natuRe Waikiki ($105 vegan or $125), Botanico ($150 for two) and Aloha Steak House ($160 for two, whole table must participate).
Moku Kitchen, Han no Daidokoro, Empire Steak House, El Cielo by Masa Gushiken, The Dotted Line, 100 Sails and Aliʻi Fish Market are also listed, but they hadn’t posted a menu price when we checked.
Tips for getting a table
- Book now for weekends. The first Saturday falls on the same night as Taste of Waipahu and a busy Hawaiʻi Food & Wine Festival weekend.
- Lunch is the sweet spot. Several of the best deals (Kaimuki Shokudo, Kapa Hale, Istanbul Hawaiʻi, Taormina) are lunch menus.
- Ask for the Restaurant Week menu when you order. Some places offer it only during certain hours.
