Here’s a reason to point the car toward the country this weekend. On Hula Hula Place in Hauʻula, a mom and her three daughters bake small batches of sourdough, cookies and banana bread and sell them from a stand one Sunday a month. The next sale is this Sunday, Nov. 8, a week later than usual.

The quick facts

  • When: Sunday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. until sold out. The stand is usually open the first Sunday of each month, but November’s sale moved back a week because of Halloween.
  • Where: Hula Hula Place, Hauʻula

A homeschool project that grew

Owner Michelle Ellis started the stand with her daughters as a homeschool project, Aloha State Daily reported. She told the paper she wanted to give them a hands-on way to learn creativity, responsibility, customer service, money and how to build something from scratch. It officially opened this past summer.

The name comes from the street, Hula Hula Place. Ellis said it also fits because the business is built with her three daughters, and they support other women-owned businesses in the community.

She has been baking sourdough for about two and a half years. After moving here, she noticed that many people had never tried fresh sourdough, since it’s tough to make in Hawaiʻi’s heat and humidity. That’s a big part of why the stand caught on, she told the paper.

What’s on the table

According to Aloha State Daily, these are the regulars:

  • Hawaiian sea salt loaf ($18): the crowd favorite, because it goes with just about everything, Ellis said.
  • Cinnamon swell loaf ($20): made with organic sugar, cinnamon and organic grass-fed butter.
  • Mini banana breeze breads ($10)
  • Sea salt sourdough cookies ($4 each or three for $10): chewy, finished with sea salt for a salty-sweet bite.
  • Iced coffee ($6): made with flavored ice in vanilla, caramel, mocha or macadamia nut.

The family also bakes limited seasonal specials. Ellis mentioned a maple-glazed pumpkin spice sourdough and s’mores sourdough cookies. Everything is made in small batches, so earlier is better, or pre-order to be safe.

Make a morning of it

The stand pairs well with a slow drive up the Windward coast on Kamehameha Highway. Ellis told the paper the family’s goal is simple: good bread, good vibes and a little community connection in Hauʻula. Be a good neighbor when you visit: park legally and don’t block driveways.
