If the drive up to Mānoa has kept you from Serg’s Mexican Kitchen, there’s an easier option now. The longtime Mānoa restaurant held a grand opening for a new Kalihi location on Sunday, Nov. 1, Aloha State Daily reported. It’s the third Serg’s on the island and moves into the North King Street space that used to hold Guieb Cafe’s Kalihi location.

The quick facts

  • Where: 1311 N. King St., Suite 6, Honolulu (Kalihi)
  • Hours: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (as listed by Aloha State Daily)
  • Weekend breakfast: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays

Why Kalihi

Chef and owner Sergio Arellano told Aloha State Daily he wasn’t really hunting for another spot, but the Kalihi opportunity made sense for customers who kept telling him Mānoa was hard to get to. He sees Kalihi as more central for a lot of people. The new store came together in about a month and a half, according to the paper.

Serg’s has been in Mānoa for about 17 years, Arellano said. It also has a counter inside the Midtown Eats food hall at The Park on Keʻeaumoku. The menu is the same at all three locations.

What to order

Arellano describes the food as Mexico City-style, built mostly on family recipes from his grandmother and parents, with a few of his own creations mixed in.

Flautas ($16.95) are the signature, he told the paper. They’re a traditional Mexico City dish made with the restaurant’s own flour tortillas, filled with your choice of meat and fried golden. They come topped with fresh avocado salsa, sour cream, queso fresco, cilantro and onions, with rice and beans on the side.

Other picks from the report:

  • Sopes ($16.95): fried masa cakes topped with beans, sour cream, queso fresco, cilantro and onions. You can mix proteins, say one steak, one chicken and one chorizo.
  • Enchiladas ($16.95–$17.95), another house specialty.
  • Garlic shrimp plate ($18.95): a customer favorite, in traditional garlic, garlic cilantro-lime or chipotle garlic.
  • Chimichanga ($16.95–$17.95): a 12-inch flour tortilla stuffed with beans, rice and your choice of chicken, steak, pork carnitas, al pastor or sautéed veggies, deep-fried and served with guacamole or pico de gallo.
  • Tacos ($5.50–$6.50 each): on grilled 6-inch corn tortillas with cilantro and onions. Al pastor and carnitas are the top two proteins, Arellano said.
  • Burritos ($16.95–$17.95): stuffed with guacamole and pico de gallo, with beans and rice.

The housemade salsas run from mild to “super hot,” so you can set your own heat level.

Weekend Mexican breakfast

On Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Serg’s serves a Mexican breakfast menu. According to Aloha State Daily, it includes huevos rancheros ($13.95), breakfast burritos ($13.95–$16.95), omelets ($11.95–$13.95), menudo ($13.95) and machaca, scrambled eggs with shredded beef ($13.95).

New locations often tweak hours in the first few weeks, so check the restaurant’s Instagram before you head over.
